When learning something for the first time, like driving a car, our conscious mind absorbs the new information and, once we have practiced driving over a period of time, it then becomes a function of our subconscious mind.
Habits are formed in the same way, like smoking. People will usually begin smoking with a conscious decision – peer pressure, stress etc. Once they have been smoking repetitively over time, they then continue with the habit on autopilot.
When people make a decision to change, it can be very difficult to achieve as our subconscious mind controls our behaviour.
For example, you consciously know that smoking is an expensive habit and bad for your health, but if the subconscious has its own reasons for wanting to carry on smoking, the subconscious part of our mind will usually win.
